Chief Calvin W. McGhee
Portrait bust

Artist statement
This work honors Chief Calvin W. McGhee, a visionary leader of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians whose life embodied respect, loyalty, courage, faithfulness, integrity, and justice. After visiting the Poarch Band of Creek Indians Museum and studying his life, I wanted to portray him not only as a chief, but as a man defined by the values, he carried and lived by.
The headdress is formed with words that represent his character and legacy. Rather than serving as decoration, they become symbols of the strength, wisdom, and moral leadership that guided his people toward recognition and dignity. This piece is a tribute to Chief McGhee, to the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, and to the enduring power of heritage, faith, and perseverance.
