Gorilla

Artist statement

Gorilla is a self-reflective work that uses the image of the gorilla as a mirror for human identity. The central drawing is surrounded by a field of laser-cut text that compares human and gorilla behavior, intelligence, emotion, and instinct. The words remind the viewer that humans and gorillas are not as separate as they may appear. They share a deep biological connection, protective instincts, emotional bonds, playfulness, intelligence, and the need for family and belonging.

At the same time, the work becomes a personal meditation. The gorilla is presented as powerful yet gentle, intimidating yet sensitive, instinctive yet thoughtful. Through this comparison, the piece reflects on the artist’s own character: strength, independence, curiosity, resistance to rigid systems, and a desire to follow instinct rather than prescribed paths. The final question, “I am a gorilla, who are you?”, turns the work outward, asking viewers to examine their own nature, assumptions, and connection to the living world.
