Wall-Mounted Light Boxes
1994
Artist statement
These wall-mounted light boxes transform humble materials into works of quiet emotional depth. Made from paper, wool taken from hand-knitted sweaters, and carefully upcycled elements, they carry both personal memory and material history. In natural light, the works reveal their tactile surfaces, textures, imperfections, and scars. Yet when illuminated from within, they become something entirely different: intimate fields of color, shadow, and hidden structure. Their meaning lies in this transformation. Like people, they remind the viewer that what is first seen is only the exterior. Only when the surrounding light fades does their inner beauty, complexity, and warmth fully emerge.
