Loneliness

Artist statement

Loneliness is a wood-turned sculpture that reflects on isolation in old age, especially in rural communities. The hollow, vessel-like form recalls the quiet silhouette of the women once commonly seen in the countryside of Spain, where the artist was born. Suspended above a simple wooden base, the form appears delicate, solitary, and inward-looking, suggesting both presence and absence. Around the piece, carved text reads: “Loneliness in old age is a form of abuse and exclusion.” This statement transforms the sculpture from a personal memory into a social reflection. The work speaks not only about aging, but about the emotional abandonment that can occur when elderly people are forgotten, unseen, or left outside the life of the community. Through the warmth of wood and the emptiness of the hollow interior, Loneliness becomes a quiet meditation on dignity, memory, and the human need to be accompanied.
