Off the Grid

Artist statement

Off the Grid explores the tension between structure and escape, order and independence. The work combines a carefully constructed wooden grid with turned wooden forms that appear to push outward from the surface, breaking away from the rigid pattern behind them. The grid is made from different varieties of fine hardwoods, creating a quiet contrast between control, craftsmanship, and natural material. Against this ordered background, the rounded forms suggest movement, self-reliance, and the desire to live outside imposed systems. The title refers not only to living “off the grid” in a practical sense, but also to stepping away from social expectations, technological dependence, and prescribed ways of life. Through wood, pattern, and form, the piece becomes a meditation on freedom, simplicity, and the human need to find space beyond the structures that contain us.
